Claude McKay's Early Poetry (1911-1922): A Digital Collection

TEI/XML Editions

TEI is an encoding format used by digital humanists in order to make digitized texts machine-readable. Scholars feed TEI-encoded materials into larger corpora; others use information embedded in TEI-encoded texts to extract quantitative data about texts. 

As of summer 2017, it's my aspiration to produce lightly coded TEI versions of all of the editions presented on this site:

Songs of Jamaica
Constab Ballads
Uncollected Poetry, 1912-1922
Spring in New Hampshire
Harlem Shadows

The TEI versions will be uploaded to Github here  as they are produced. As of June 2017, we have been working on a lightly-encoded version of Constab Ballads.

Chris Forster and Roopika Risam have already produced an excellent TEI version of Harlem Shadows that can be accessed here. My own approach to TEI is indebted to theirs, though my intention in encoding McKay's works as TEI has been much more fundamental. 

In the future, we may return to these editions with more technical encoding relating to rhyme scheme, textual notes, McKay's use of Jamaican patois, and semantic tagging.
