Reflection On The Importance of Writing Skills for Your Career

My mother, a Family Court Hearing Officer (she’s like a judge), has pounded the power of law into my head from an early age. The ability to help others is the mantra my mother preaches. She uses the law to explain everything, specifically the power of education. Although I do not foresee a legal career in my future, I do understand and value of the law, and the hard work it takes to get a professional degree. I am ready, willing and able to put in that work!

Furthermore, a huge part of education is writing, especially writing essays, dissertation introduction, and book summaries (i.e. A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings Summary, Bartleby the Scrivener Summary, etc.). Writing is transformative and truly impacts the world. Without writing, dreams are not borne. Without writing, ideas are not expressed. Writing creates law; writing creates medical research. Writing is the backbone of all major documents the world holds near and dear. For example, where would we be if our forefathers would not have written down the Constitution or the Bill of Rights? Writing creates images the written word never could.

Writing Skills

Additionally, the ability to write is a soon-to-be-lost art. With more and more of my generation choosing to express themselves in 140 characters or less, the beauty to writing is often lost. Nevertheless, there are many who continue to draft lovely and informative documents, which change the world as we know it.

Subsequently, excellent writing skills will enable me to secure employment upon my graduation from college. Prior to that, my excellent writing skills will hopefully enable me to secure scholarships to finance my collegiate career, and even my graduate education. While in high school, I did not fathom the importance of fine-tuning my writing skills. I hated reading, and consequently, shirked from honors English classes, and the writing lessons that those advanced classes afforded students willing to put forth the effort. It was only my Junior year that I chose to enroll in Honors English III, due mainly to the intense boredom I experienced in English II. Well for me, this small task excelled my writing exponentially! The discovery that writing could be an outlet for expression, whether creative or simply explanatory, was an epiphany for me! An entire world opened before my eyes, and mastering grammar and writing skills soon became enjoyable to me. Because of this, I began to get great grades and high praises for my writing, and was even featured in a magazine!

For those reasons, writing continues to be transformative, and will continue to change the world. More personally, writing teaches me life-lessons which will help me succeed in life, and for that, I am profoundly grateful. Furthermore, because I have mastered writing, my job prospects will be more interested in me. Everyone needs writing ability, but it is only people who have mastered this ability who excel in whatever path they choose in life. This fact, you see, is why I believe that writing will enable me to secure and maintain a professional job after college.
