Majority of fasteners are generally made from carbon steel. Depending on the strength required the material grades are specified further to Grade 4.6, Grade 4.8, Grade 5.6, Grade 8.8, Grade 10.9 & Grade 12.9. Apart from this carbon steel, stainless steel material is widely used where there is good corrosion resistance required. These stainless steel fasteners are quite costlier in comparison to normal carbon steel fasteners.
When cost comes into concern, generally it is advisable to use carbon steel fasteners with good coatings/finishes to improve the shelf life of fasteners. Some commonly used coatings in fasteners are Zinc Plating/Galvanizing, HDG, Black oxide, Phosphating etc.

UNC (Unified National Coarse Threads)
- UNC threads are most commonly used threads as they fit deeper and easier removal when needed. They also have higher advantage of a higher tolerance during manufacturing and coating.
UNF (Unified National Fine Threads)
- UNF have more specific fit and tighter tolerances, which helps to have better torque locking ability and can carry heavy loads.
UNEF (Unified National Extra Fine Threads)
- UNEF Threads are used with tapped holes in thin material and hard material
Constant Pitch Threads
- Constant Pitch threads, can be created in different diameters to suit any given application. Bolts with diameter of 1” or above will use pitches of 8, 12 or 16 threads/inch.
