PREFACE
In 1916, Arthur Alfonso Schomburg, well-known collector and curator, published the first considerable bibliography of American Negro poetry*. In this compilation were listed 236 titles with a bibliography of some 38 editions of the poetry of Phillis Wheatley compiled earlier by Charles F. Heartman. In addition to the writings of Negro poets of the United States, there was a small group of titles from persons of Negro ancestry
of Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico and Jamaica.
The present bibliography is an expansion of the Schomburg checklist. While it does not include the foreign titles of the earlier list it more than doubles the number of domestic titles alone which were listed in the Schomburg list. This list includes, specifically, books and pamphlets by individual poets: anthologies edited by Negro authors and a few printed broadsides. It also presents some occasional poems which were originally appended to or included in prose writings prior to 1835. If I reiterate that this bibliography primarily contains works by Negro authors born in the United States it is only to disclose that the exception thereto is a number of works by West Indian writers who have lived an appreciable time in the United States or who have had their works published here in the English Language.
It must be mentioned that one of the principal objectives of this bibliography is to afford an index to the relative distribution of books and other published materials of Negro poetry among our libraries and thus indirectly to reflect the richness of American holdings in this sphere. It was not the compiler's aim, however, to make this an exhaustive bibliography; some titles have escaped the attention of the compiler; others known to have been printed could not be located. It is hoped that omissions or corrections when determined by the reader will be forwarded to the compiler. The exclusion of editions of Negro poetry translated into foreign languages and of new editions or translations of classics or other works previously published was decided upon for reasons of economy and brevity and directness. It was also recognized that a checklist of titles culled from periodical literature of both this and an earlier day would have been very desirable, although at the present time too involved a task to be merely inserted as filling for the present work. As to the usefulness of a bibliography of Negro poetry, the very fact that the need for revision and expansion of the earlier compilation by Schomburg has been recognized is sufficient testimony. Certainly there is no reason to regard the olden question, "Is poetry racial?" a valid objection to this enterprise, since it has been shown that a poem can be racial in content while remaining poetic in form. And it is for those who may wish to study the facets of race consciousness in Negro expression as well as the aesthetic factors that this bibliography is intended.
The compiler wishes to acknowledge indebtedness to the Librarians of the Schomburg Collection, 135th Street Public Library, New York City, and to Miss Gertrude Franklin, cataloger at Lincoln University Library, Lincoln, Mo. Miss Franklin was kind enough to verify certain volumes in the library of Atlanta University which were not found elsewhere. To Mr. Henry P. Slaughter of Washington, D. C.; Mr. Arthur B. Spingarn of New York City, and Mr. Charles F. Heartman of Hattiesburg, Miss., well-known collectors of Negroana, special acknowledgements are due for their willingness to open the resources of their collections to the compiler. The entries of the Writings of Phillis Wheatley have been reprinted from Mr. C. F. Heartman's Bibliography of Phillis Wheatley with his permission.
