Editor's Note, "Lines to Garrison" by Carrie Williams Clifford (1911)

William Lloyd Garrison (1805-1879) was one of the leading abolitionist writers and intellectuals of the 19th century. He co-founded an influential abolitionist newspaper, "The Liberator," in 1832. The lines quoted in Clifford's poem ("I am in earnest--I will not equivocate--I will not excuse--I will not retreat a single inch--and I will be heard") are from the first issue of the newspaper.
