The excerpt below is taken from Berry’s chapter on “Seances at Home,” in which she describes private séances. Of particular interest is the way that Berry herself acknowledges the blurring of the boundaries between public and private even in the domestic séance. Speaking more specifically to the home environment, in Berry’s excerpt the domestic location and its associated objects (like a piano) play key roles in the spirit activity.
