Biography of Sir Henry Haggard

This biography of Sir Henry Haggard is incredibly useful for providing context for the numerous references to weapons and tactics mentioned in King Solomon’s Mines – his use of superstition within the novel to subordinate the Kukuana’s to his “authority” echoes a number of articles concerning South Africa in light of the Second Boer War’s introduction of new weapons and tactics. The mention of the Gatling gun during the battle scene of the novel (excerpted in the following section) is tactically correct, as the large enemy force marching from the village would have been in the prime position for a Gatling attack as opposed to, say, the Boers who frequently dug in thus making the Gatling useless.
