With the invention of the Gatling gun and other automatic weapons, many Victorians had a tremendous fear of the capacity for destruction inherent within these weapons. Whether it is the wounds they cause or the reduction of people necessary to inflict tremendous damage, military technologies allowed for increasing amounts of bloodshed without the need for individual riflemen.
