On Man's Advice to Women (Washington Post, July 28 1885)
Duncan sarcastically thanks the editors of the post for the number of columns which have appeared recently offering unsolicited advice from men to women. She talks about how women do not even have any “zeal for kitchen accomplishments”, as they believe that “marital satisfaction” lies in mastery of the same few cookbooks. Women must be convinced of the “errors of their ways at all costs”, and men have infallible opinions on what makes a good housekeeper and cook. She talks about how “femino-philanthropists” (men offering advice to women) “helpfully” criticize their speech. Duncan states that men should not be so “selfish” and offer their “helpful” advice to other men and boys as well.
