A Passage To India (1924): A Digital Edition of E.M. Forster's Novel, Edited by Amardeep Singh

Deccani Brahmin

This phrase describes both Godbole's caste status (he's a high-caste Brahmin) and his geographical origins -- he is from the southern Indian plains. Since the town where the novel is set is in the northern plains (in the state in India today referred to as Bihar), it is safe to understand he is not from Chandrapore itself, and may not be a native Hindi speaker.

Deccani Brahmins had a long tradition of working for Muslim rulers in southern Indian kingdoms (the Deccani Sultanates).
