Adivasi Religions; Religious Conversion; Christian conversion
A number of Adivasi writers explore traditional Adivasi religious beliefs and practices, sometimes under the umbrella of "Sarna." Others do so more incidentally, as with the engagement with the sacred grove or Jaher concept in Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar's My Father's Garden.
A small proportion of Adivasis from the 'Tribal Belt' (Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha) have converted to Christianity. We see them represented by writers like Pyara Kerketta. The Malayalam writer Narayan also writes about the impact of Christian missionaries on Adivasi life.
A much larger proportion of Adivasis in the Northeast have converted to Christianity, and most Naga writers we have encountered identify as Christians.
