African American Poetry (1870-1928): A Digital Anthology

Langston Hughes, "Dreams" (1923)

Hold fast to dreams, my son,
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams, O boy,
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
