Adivasi Writers: An Introduction to India's Indigenous Literature

Author Profiles

Here, we'll create short profiles of Adivasi writers, with links to resources about them, as well as excerpts from published works.

The goal is to highlight their contributions as poets and writers of fiction first and foremost. We are also aware of their specific community identities, and flagging that information with thematic tags.

For those new to Adivasi literature, a writer who might be a good place to start might be Vandana Tete, a highly influential writer, editor, and critic who has published and edited many books focused on Adivasi literature and identity. She largely publishes in Hindi, though a small amount of her writing is available in English translation.

We would also strongly recommend Anuj Lugun and Jacinta Kerketta, both contemporary writers with important points of view.

In English, the most successful Adivasi writer in recent years might be Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar.
