African American Poetry: A Digital Anthology

Frankie Carter De Berry, "A Study in Brown" (1917)

Phyllis is a lady rare;
For she has an air of grace,
And a sweet and sunny smile
Breaks in ripples o'er her face;
On her soft brown cheeks there glows
Modesty as well as youth;
There's embedded in her eyes
Loveliness as well as truth.
