Keeping in Touch: An Anthology of the Victorian Seance

A Seance with the Progressive Spiritualists

Published in The Sphinx in 1869, “A Séance with the Progressive Spiritualists” contains the report of a journalist who attended a spiritualist meeting that ended with a public séance conducted by a female medium. Of particular interest is the discomfort the séance audience felt when the medium became the vessel for a male, low-class spirit, demonstrating concern over how class and gender boundaries were broken in general and in public spaces.
