The Kiplings and India: A Collection of Writings from British India, 1870-1900

A Pinchbeck Goddess (Alice MacDonald Fleming, 1897)

This novel by Alice MacDonald Fleming expands on her 1886 short story of the same title, published in the Civil & Military Gazette. The theme -- of a single woman who is neglected during the peak social season in Simla, who then disguises herself as a glamorous widow -- is substantially similar. Unlike her first novel, which was written and published in India, this novel by Fleming was written and first published in England and the U.S.
