Though blacker flows the blood within these veins
And darker-hued this welted human back,
A whiter soul I own than they who seek
To purge their sins upon a flaming pyre.
Though crinkled mat this hair upon my head,
And coarser features mark this face of night,-
I still can laugh with Fate and dream my dreams,
I still can dream my dreamsI
