African American Poetry: A Digital Anthology

Roscoe Wright, "Dark Communicant" (1930)

Dark Communicnt

Piety shone forth from her eyes,
While through her lips
Passed the darndest lies.

And as she murmured
Soft, low payers,
She was thinking of
The latest airs.

She fidgeted on the hard church seat,
While she tapped jazz rhythms
With her restless feet.
