J. Pauline Smith, "A War-Time Prayer" (1917/1922)

 A WAR-TIME PRAYER—1917.

 Father, in heaven, Thy purposes prove,
 Through the dark shadows, may we feel Thy love!
 Christ, our Redeemer, who alone sets men free,
 Guide, guard our soldiers, who cross the blue sea!
 Tried in war's furnace, may the fires refine;
 Called on to suffer, may we not repine;
 Purg'd of our vanity, shorn of our pride;
 Out from the trenches, we'd rise purified;
 Let democracy's triumph, distinctions efface,
 All men be brothers, regardless of race!
