Lucian B. Watkins, "The Execution" (1919)

Editor's Note: John Snowden was executed in 1919 for the murder of a white woman, Lottie Mae Brandon, in October 1917. He was hanged despite irregularities in the case, and later was granted a posthumous pardon by the governor of Maryland in 2001. More about this case here.

The Execution

Feb. 28 1919, the hanging of John Snowden at Annapolis, Md.)

He stood with Death, at Life's last sweet of time,
Brief-paused above his grave beyond reprieve.
His new-born soul, triumphant and sublime,
Hymned guiltless to its God: this we believe!
