Poems Published in "The Carolina Magazine"
In May 1927, May 1928, and May 1929, The Carolina Magazine published special issues devoted to African American literature. These featured poetry by prominent poets associated with the Harlem Renaissance, as well as essays by figures like Charles H. Johnson and Alain Locke, as well as a sampling of short fiction.
The May 1927 special issue of The Carolina Magazine was guest-edited by Lewis Alexander.
The May 1928 special issue contains essays by Alain Locke, "The Message of the Negro Poets," Allan R. Freelon,, "The New Negro--A pen and ink sketch," and a review of Countee Cullen's edited collection, Caroling Dusk.
The overall quality of the selections is quite high; many of the poems below were in fact not collected elsewhere in the 1920s.
