African American Poetry: A Digital Anthology

Lewis Alexander, "My Body" (1929)

My Body

My body is an instrument,
   Play it you who will;
But they who touch the vital chords
   Music will distil.

Let's say it is a violin,
   Or better still a reed;
Through which to play a tune, Marlyn,
   To sate your every need.
