African American Poetry (1870-1928): A Digital Anthology

Georgia Douglas Johnson, "Nonchalance" (1928)

I'll not return to Fortune's wheel,
She is a Jade!
And laughs to scorn the trust I held,
The promises she made:
But pass on down the boulevard
With others—debonaire—
I wonder if it's very hard—
This seeming not to care?
