African American Poetry (1870-1928): A Digital Anthology

Arna Bontemps, "Angela" (1927)

Angela

Arna Bontemps

So while a lessening glint of sun ray
Loiters golden in your hair,
Pale girl, do you not mourn for memories of the morning?
Would you not stay the failing beam?
We who were born in the night know songs
For the deep, cold watches of gloom.
Lie down, O kith of the glorious day,
And weep while Sorrow sings.
