African American Poetry: A Digital Anthology

Arna Bontemps, "The Shattering" (March 1926)

The pitcher,
Struck by a careless hand,
Is broken at the fountain.
The stone that was so sure
Is cracked at last
By the dip of Spring;
And the song,
Once eagerly proclaimed,
Grown mute in me
At last.
