African American Poetry (1870-1928): A Digital Anthology

Louise Alston Burleigh, "Hope" 1905)

I will not cease searching
For places unknown,
I will not cease hoping
To kneel at the Throne;
But on through the darkness
Of trouble and care
I go daily praying
To find comfort there.

I will not cease toiling
As days come and go,
I will not cease trying
To conquer the foe,
'Til my frail body weakens
And sinks to the sod
And my soul is uplifted
To anchor with God.
