African American Poetry (1870-1928): A Digital Anthology

Will H. Hendrickson, "At Christmas Time" (1905)

There's a joy in every breeze
At Christmas time,
As it sings about the eaves
At Christmas time.
When the heart is light and gay,
All our troubles melt away,
And sunshine comes home to stay
At Christmas time.

In the crackling of the fire
At Christmas time,
Which has formerly meant ire
No thought of rhyme
Now we find in perfect feet
Rhyme and rythm all complete,
Loving verse our hearts to greet
At Christmas time.

the falling of the snow
At Christmas time,
Lies a lesson we should know
At Christmas time,
As the dark earth high and low
Vanishes beneath the snow,
Let us banish sin and woe
At Christmas time.
