African American Poetry: A Digital Anthology

Charles Bertram Johnson, "Rain-Mist" (1921)

All day within an upturned glass
Of mist and clouds, the ghostly rains
Streak down and listless winds that pass,
Like vapor chilled on window panes.

Gray threads of color blurred and purled
And streaming pencils tapering white,--
The autumn mood is on the world
And I am helpless in its might.
