African American Poetry (1870-1928): A Digital Anthology

Joseph S. Cotter, "Whatever Road" (1920)

Why I should grieve on a cheery day?
For why fate lessens my scanty fare
And flicks each light on my pilgrim's way,
I do not know or care.

I will suppose that fate is just,
I will suppose that grief is wise,
And I will tread what path I must,
To enter Paradise.
