African American Poetry (1870-1928): A Digital Anthology

Carrie Williams Clifford, "Spring" (1915)

Spring, thou wilful, changeful maid,
Venturesome, yet half afraid
   King Winter to defy!
Come, with all thy airs and graces,
Perfumes sweet and flower-laces;
When thy beauty rare he faces,
   He of love will die.
