African American Poetry: A Digital Anthology

Lillian B. Witten, "Youth Passes" (1920)

Some grimy little newsboys
Got in the car with me,
And each one had a hockey-stick,
And each was filled with glee.
They jostled one another,
Told tales of prowess done;
One of them had a brother
Who outrivalled everyone.
And all the old men's faces,
Around me in the train,
Gazed on the wide green spaces
Of their boyhood's joy again.
